December Membership Meeting - Featured Guest Speaker, DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier

Monday, December 7th at 7:30 PM to be held at Anderson House, 2118 Massachusetts Avenue NW
Featured guest speaker: Police Chief Kathy Lanier and a briefing by Ward 2 Council Member Jack Evans

Please send your questions for the Chief or CM Evans to Robin Diener at president@dupont-circle.org

Cathy Lanier is D.C.'s first female police chief.  Chief Lanier believes, "to be able to lead other officers takes credibility and trust." Those are qualities that she has built up in 19 years on the force.

Chief Lanier has spent her entire law enforcement career with the Metropolitan Police Department, beginning in 1990. Most of her career has been in uniformed patrol, where she served as Commander of the Fourth District, one of the largest and most diverse residential patrol districts in the city. She also served as the Commanding Officer of the Department's Major Narcotics Branch and Vehicular Homicide Units

Chief Lanier is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's Drug Unit Commanders Academy. She holds Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Management from Johns Hopkins University, and a Master's Degree in National Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. She is certified at the technician level in Hazardous Materials Operations.

Lanier describes her crime-fighting philosophy as proactive. "We can no longer wait for crime to come to us but need to look at the history and the trends and project from there."  Some of Lanier's tactics have drawn fire   (i.e., curfews, search-and-seize methods, a controversial five days of checkpoints in the Trinidad neighborhood of DC after a series of shootings, etc).  In her two and a half years as Chief, there has been a decrease in major crime incidents and in 2008 had the highest closure rate on homicide cases, the highest on department record.

Our thanks to the Society of the Cincinnati for welcoming DCCA to Anderson House.  Docents will guide a tour of the magnificent Beaux Art building after the program.

Finally, help us build our organization. Consider inviting a Dupont Circle neighbor who is not yet a member of DCCA to come with you. Meetings are free. After such a great program, your neighbor will surely want to join DCCA!

Plans for two proposals to develop the West End Library will be on display following the meeting. Representatives from Eastbanc and Toll Brothers will be on hand to answer questions during the reception after the program.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTE

Since Dupont does not have a library, many of us use the MLK Jr Memorial Library at 901 G Street. Parking is no longer available at MLK due to budget cuts to the library security detail. Sunday hours at neighborhood libraries have also been discontinued. Only MLK remains open on Sundays, but without parking.

The Dupont Circle Citizens Association (DCCA) was founded in 1922 "to promote and protect the interests of the residents of the neighborhood." We still do that. Our area is a lively mix of homes, embassies, restaurants, shops, and galleries — and one of the city's most architecturally significant neighborhoods. These qualities are no accident. The unparalleled quality of living the neighborhood provides is the result of countless volunteer activities carried out by generations of Dupont Circle Citizens Association members. DCCA is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting interests of the residents of our neighborhoods.

Reminder: Nov Dupont/Kal Public Safety/PSA 208 Meeting

On Tuesday November 17th, citizens and business representatives will meet from 7 to 8:00pm at MPD 3D station (1620 V St.). (Held on the 3rd Tuesdays for Dupont and Kalorama-Sheridan issues and still in the 3D building even though our police work out of 2D.) Our community depends on good communications to and from our police. This is a roundtable meeting where we problem-solve. Bring an issue – no matter how minor. If you can’t make it, please convey your issue to someone who will be attending.

We’ll be talking about the rooftop burglar, getting a banning order to prevent a specific person off your property, crime rates, and whatever else comes up.

Anyone have any idea of locations to hold the January 19th meeting? We’ve found that moving the meeting every other month has brought new people out and been good for attacking specific issues.

National Night Out - Tuesday 8/4 6p in Dupont Circle - Reminder

Subject: [DupontForum] National Night Out - Tuesday 8/4 6p in Dupont Circle

This coming Tuesday, August 4th, will be National Night - observed in 49 states and the District of Columbia.* This is the annual event that the police stage for the community, and it's our opportunity to spend a little time to meet and get to know the officers who patrol our neighborhood.

This year, our neighborhood event will be held IN DUPONT CIRCLE from 6pm to 8pm. We'll be grillin' some burgers and hot dogs donated by Circa, and serving up soda and water...all free. Not only will the officers from our PSA be attending, but we'll also be hosting folks from the mounted unit of the Park Police (complete with horse). And we wouldn't be surprised if the Chief of Police and Mayor stop by.

The past two years, the event was held on Hopkins Place and 17th Street and both were great successes. Both years, residents were able to alert police to ongoing problems, and solutions (including an arrest in the Hopkins case) were quickly forthcoming.

So consider this your formal invitation to stop by the Circle between 6pm and 8pm this coming Tuesday, August 4th for National Night Out.

*Texas observes it in October, which has more to do with the hot and miserable weather down there than with the politics of secession or where our President was actually born or anything like that. Texans seem to lack the gritty toughness that we have to deal with heat.

Perry invited us to do the July 21st meeting in Omega (in the alley between P, O, 21st and 22nd, probably upstairs). MPD confirmed. We had some discussions last night about the Reimbursable Detail on P.  We can discuss whether we want to do a walk-around for the 2nd half of the meeting.

Not as many people joined us to walk 17th last night as did join us on 15th in April.

Sadly, Lt. Erich Miller has taken a job with the Feds. He's been a great asset to Dupont. Sergeant John McDonald is now our Acting Lieutenant. He's already a great asset.

We've been trying to vary the location of the Dupont/Kalorama Public Safety Meeting every other month. April's meeting at Stead Playground resulted in some good conflict resolution and DPR/DDoT help on lighting and facilities in Stead. That, again, validated the worth of moving meetings around. We get new people to come out when we move the meetings as well.

On Tuesday June 16th, we'll meet from 7 to 7:30pm at MPD 3D station (1620 V St.) and then proceed down 17th Street to P. MPD, other DC gov staff, concerned neighbors, Block Captains, and activists hope to meet up with citizens and business people on the way down 17th to learn about issues – kind of like Orange Hat patrols. (So if you live or work at 17th and P, you should plan to start looking for us at about 8:10 to 8:30 if you want to get to know your foot beat officers and their leadership.)

Please come up with a location for the August meeting (always the 3rd Tuesday of the month) if you have some issues in a particular area. We'll also be trying to pull together a National Night Out event for August 4th.

We’ll also be trying to pull together a National Night Out event for August 4th.

FW: PSA 208 May Meeting - Reminder

Dupont/Kalorama has had some good arrests (5) in the past month for robbery. There hasn’t been a rooftop burglary or catalogue attempt since March. The shootings north of us in Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleasant, and Columbia heights are bad news through.

We’re hoping to get some 3rd District staff to this meeting to talk about some Borderstan issues but haven’t confirmed that yet.

Last month’s meeting at Stead Playground had some good reports about what Neighborhood Network Block Captains have been doing. We got DDoT and Parks and Rec to work on some issue in and around Stead Playground based on input at that meeting. That, again, validates the worth of moving meetings around. Please come up with a location for the June meeting if you have some issues in a particular area.
