FW: PSA 208 May Meeting - Reminder

Dupont/Kalorama has had some good arrests (5) in the past month for robbery. There hasn’t been a rooftop burglary or catalogue attempt since March. The shootings north of us in Adams Morgan, Mt. Pleasant, and Columbia heights are bad news through.

We’re hoping to get some 3rd District staff to this meeting to talk about some Borderstan issues but haven’t confirmed that yet.

Last month’s meeting at Stead Playground had some good reports about what Neighborhood Network Block Captains have been doing. We got DDoT and Parks and Rec to work on some issue in and around Stead Playground based on input at that meeting. That, again, validates the worth of moving meetings around. Please come up with a location for the June meeting if you have some issues in a particular area.

Reminder - Dupont Circle/Kal Public Safety (PSA 208) and Neighborhood Watch Meeting At STEAD PLAYGROUND

1)     Dupont Public Safety Meeting/PSA 208 - Tuesday, April 21st at 7pm in the Stead Playground Recreation Center Building located at 1625 P St NW. (Held on the 3rd Tuesdays for Dupont and Kalorama-Sheridan issues. We occasionally move this meeting out of the 3D building to help stimulate interest.) Our community depends on good communications to and from our police. This is a roundtable meeting where we problem-solve. Bring an issue – no matter how minor.

and

2)     Neighbor Watch/Block Captains/NN208 Meeting – issues like the recent rooftop burglaries point out the need for a more active Neighborhood Watch in Dupont. (If MPD could have written to the Block Captains asking them to get the word on out to citizens to look for suspicious people on roofs and on how to secure roof entrances, the more likely they would have caught the guy and more citizens would have been informed and likely to prepare and protect themselves.)

Dupont’s Neighborhood Watch covers many to most of the relevant blocks with Block Captains (administered at the Neighborhood Network 208 Google Group [NN208]) but isn’t very active.

We’re hoping that Block Captains have made up (or will make) an email and/or phone list of people on their block with whom they are sharing issues and from whom they are learning of issues. (Block Captains who live in a big building may only want to work within their building).

Some of the reasons to have a Dupont Public Safety meeting directed specific at revitalizing the Neighborhood Network 208 are to introduce Block Captains to our new MPD leadership and Community Liaison and to motivate/train Block Captains. Most of the Neighborhood Watch should goals be able to be accomplished over the internet. We’ve found that changing the meeting locations around occasionally has help attract new people.

From Officer Fletcher - PSA 208 Residents, we would like to remind everyone that next week, Tuesday, April 21st 2009 at 7pm we are having our monthly PSA 208 Meeting at the Stead Recreation Center located at 1625 P St NW.

In regards to information sharing and partnerships, we strongly encourage our PSA 208 Neighborhood Block Captains to please attend.  This would be a great opportunity for Block Captains to meet as a group as well as discuss best-practices.  As a reminder, the Neighborhood Block Captains Group is a program managed and coordinated by citizen activists. We appreciate the energy and dedication of these citizens and Block Captains. Also, if you are interested in joining the Block Captains’ contact list or for more specific information, please come and speak with a Block Captain.

As a reminder, we would like to encourage citizens to learn more about Alert DC by visiting the following link; http://textalert.ema.dc.gov.

Borderstan Walk-Around and news coverage

Thanks to everyone who organized, staffed, and participated in last night’s Borderstan Walk-Around. Apparently, ABC 7 News staff read about the Borderstan Walk-Around on Borderstan.com and covered it (here). Channel 7 was more interested in the rooftop burglar than general safety in Borderstan, but it was a good story. The event’s main goal was to improve lighting. To that end, the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations helped get DDoT Urban Forestry and DDoT lighting staff out to listen to community member concerns about and make plans to improve overly dark areas on their blocks and alleys.

This event was a good example of what flows out the Dupont/Kalorama Public Safety/PSA 208 Meetings. Please do bring other issues to those meetings. BTW, the April 21st meeting is going to be in the Stead Playground Rec Center building. (I bet lots of you have never been in there). We also have a new push to make community to police liaisoning even more local by re-vitalizing our Neighborhood Watch program.

APRIL PSA 208 MEETING IMPORTANT: CHANGE IN LOCATION.

PSA 208 BLOCK CAPTAINS-

Please Come To The April PSA Meeting If You Can Possibly Make It.

April 21st 7pm

It Will Be Held In  The Stead Recreation Center on P Street,

Located Half Way In Between 16th And 17th Street.

The number of thefts from homes and businesses has increased dramatically since late last year.  Robberies, including robberies in which citizens have been hurt are up.  The economy could play a major factor in crime trends in the near future.

NOT ONLY FOR BLOCK CAPTAINS EVERYONE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS INVITED

Please insure that anyone in your building and on your block who is interested in their personal and public safety is aware of the meeting, and that they are invited to attend.

A flier with the information will be posted on the group site, available to anyone who can print it out and has some tape, time or tacks to post it.  You, of course, may design your own.

Come with questions.  Come with problems and concerns.  Anything that is not the responsibility of the MPD, such as street lights that are burned out or non-existent will be forwarded for action by the appropriate District department.

Where there is more light and more information, there is less crime.

If any one has an idea or a question please e mail Neighborhood.Network.208@gmail.com

Please feel free to re-post this note on any Dupont Circle neighborhood website or blog.

Thank you to Sgt. Mcdonald for securing the venue.

PS: On another note, there are almost a dozen new officers, fresh out of the academy, in PSA 208 teamed up with veteran officers patrolling the streets.  If you see any, please say hello.

Reminder - Dupont Circle/Kal Public Safety (PSA 208) Meeting, Neighborhood Watch Revival, and Borderstan Walk-Around

1)     Meeting – Dupont/Kalorama Public Safety Meeting/PSA 208 - Tuesday, March 17th at 7pm at the 3rd District Metropolitan Police Dept Headquarters at 1620 V Street. (Held on the 3rd Tuesdays for Dupont and Kalorama-Sheridan issues and still in the 3D building even though our police work out of 2D.) Our community depends on good communications to and from our police. This is a roundtable meeting where we problem-solve. Bring an issue – no matter how minor. If you can’t make it, please convey your issue to someone who will be attending.

1.      Rooftop Burglaries

2.      Street Robberies

3.      Moving the Public Safety Meeting/PSA to different problems spots has proved effective. We’d like ideas for issue-specific meetings for the April 21st meeting.

2)     Neighborhood Watch – We have a good number of Block Captains lined up but need to engage them to reach out to their neighbors. Please inquire with Sol Levine regarding becoming a block Captain and sign up at the Neighborhood Network 208 Google Group. And please come to Tuesday night’s Public Safety/PSA meeting to brainstorm on how to engage Block Captains.

3)     Borderstan Night-Safety Walk Around - Read about here.

What: Borderstan Night-Safety Walk Around. Join police and city government staff for a quick walk around Borderstan. The purpose is to point out dark areas that need lighting, burned out street lights, overgrown trees, etc. The goal is to improve night safety in Borderstan through better lighting and visibility.

When: This Thursday, March 19, 6 p.m. The group will leave 15th and T NW at 6 p.m. and proceed south.

Who: You, your neighbors, representatives of D.C. government agencies. This includes members of the MPD, D.C. Department of Transportation and Andrew Huff, the Outreach and Services Specialist for Ward 2.

Why: You can meet members of the police who patrol West Borderstan (PSA 208) and East Borderstan (PSA 307) as well as your neighbors… and contribute to public safety by working with officials to fix lighting- and visibility-related problems.

Where: 15th Street NW, starting at T Street and proceeding south to Rhode Island Avenue NW. Join us at 15th and T or watch for us as we make our way down 15th Street NW. Our goal is to cover/talk to residents on the 1400- and 1500-blocks of all streets between T Street and Rhode Island Avenue NW.

More Information: Contact Andrew Huff at andrew.huff@dc.gov or Borderstan at borderstan@gmail.com.

RE: [DupontForum] -Preventive Suggestions for Securing Skylights and Roof Top Hatches-

I’ve attached that doc (for those of you not on Digest Version of listserv delivery). The burglars aren’t using large tools to open these hatches. So securing hatches and skylights as in Officer Fletcher describes in this doc should make you pretty safe.

We know of 19 Dupont rooftop burglaries. They have not been more widespread than Dupont as far as MPD can figure.

The Tuesday meeting dedicated to this topic went well. MPD is throwing all sorts of manpower at this and needs our help looking out for the perpetrator(s). Please contact your neighbors. Only 625 people of the 18000 Dupont residents are on the DupontForum.  The Current should cover it today and the City Paper should tomorrow.
