August Dupont/Kal Public Safety/PSA 208 Meeting - Reminder

On Tuesday August 17th, citizens and business representatives will meet from 7 to 8:00pm at MPD 3D station (1620 V St.). (Held on the 3rd Tuesdays for Dupont and Kalorama-Sheridan issues and still in the 3D building even though our police work out of 2D.) Our community depends on good communications to and from our police. This is a roundtable meeting where we problem-solve. Bring an issue – no matter how minor. If you can’t make it, please convey your issue to someone who will be attending.

MPD talked about the recent alleged hate crimes at last week’s ANC meeting. There will likely be more on the topic Tuesday night in that there has been an arrest in a related murder case.

CAC Meetings (Police) - Reminders

Last night the 3rd District notified us that Chief Lanier is appearing at the Metropolitan Police Departments 3rd District CAC here. If you haven’t been to meetings with her, you should consider going; she’s terrific.

This morning our 2nd District Assistant US Attorney Community Prosecutor Anita LaRue announced (below) that the 2nd District CAC is having DC’s new US Attorney and asked for questions from those who can’t travel to 2D at Idaho Avenue at 7pm on Wed the 28th. You could convey questions to AUSA LaRue in the email below or to me. Getting our prosecutorial priorities to the US Attorney is important.

Context: CAC’s (Citizen’s Advisory Council’s) are volunteer groups that meet with the District Commander monthly. Dupont and Kalorama were moved from the 2nd District to the 3rd a few years ago. The areas to the north and east of the political boundaries of Dupont are in 3D.  I usually announce the PSA meeting which is where the community meets with the Lieutenant.

Hi Rob-

Next Wednesday, United States Attorney Ronald C.  Machen Jr. will attend the 2D CAC at the Second District. He chose this meeting because of the opportunity to address residents from various PSAs.

I know robberies and thefts from auto are two issues in PSA 208.  Please forward any other concerns, ideas you would like the office to address next week.

Thank you in advance.

RE: Feb 16 Borderstan Meeting - Reminder

Last fall, (then) 3D Commander Kucik hosted a meeting on 1400 R issues. We’re holding a follow up to that and a general Borderstan meeting (at the regular PSA 208 meeting) on February 16th in 3D at 1620 V Street at 7pm.  The new 3D Commander Jacob Kishter and 2D Commander Klein plan to be in attendance.

Looking forward to making some progress

If there are other matters that you’d help to explore at the regular PSA meeting, we could hold side meetings to handle those concerns.

We had what seemed to be a successful Crime/Nightlife Summit a couple weeks back and will be discussing follow up soon.

December Membership Meeting - Featured Guest Speaker, DC Police Chief Cathy Lanier

Monday, December 7th at 7:30 PM to be held at Anderson House, 2118 Massachusetts Avenue NW
Featured guest speaker: Police Chief Kathy Lanier and a briefing by Ward 2 Council Member Jack Evans

Please send your questions for the Chief or CM Evans to Robin Diener at president@dupont-circle.org

Cathy Lanier is D.C.'s first female police chief.  Chief Lanier believes, "to be able to lead other officers takes credibility and trust." Those are qualities that she has built up in 19 years on the force.

Chief Lanier has spent her entire law enforcement career with the Metropolitan Police Department, beginning in 1990. Most of her career has been in uniformed patrol, where she served as Commander of the Fourth District, one of the largest and most diverse residential patrol districts in the city. She also served as the Commanding Officer of the Department's Major Narcotics Branch and Vehicular Homicide Units

Chief Lanier is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration's Drug Unit Commanders Academy. She holds Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Management from Johns Hopkins University, and a Master's Degree in National Security Studies from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. She is certified at the technician level in Hazardous Materials Operations.

Lanier describes her crime-fighting philosophy as proactive. "We can no longer wait for crime to come to us but need to look at the history and the trends and project from there."  Some of Lanier's tactics have drawn fire   (i.e., curfews, search-and-seize methods, a controversial five days of checkpoints in the Trinidad neighborhood of DC after a series of shootings, etc).  In her two and a half years as Chief, there has been a decrease in major crime incidents and in 2008 had the highest closure rate on homicide cases, the highest on department record.

Our thanks to the Society of the Cincinnati for welcoming DCCA to Anderson House.  Docents will guide a tour of the magnificent Beaux Art building after the program.

Finally, help us build our organization. Consider inviting a Dupont Circle neighbor who is not yet a member of DCCA to come with you. Meetings are free. After such a great program, your neighbor will surely want to join DCCA!

Plans for two proposals to develop the West End Library will be on display following the meeting. Representatives from Eastbanc and Toll Brothers will be on hand to answer questions during the reception after the program.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTE

Since Dupont does not have a library, many of us use the MLK Jr Memorial Library at 901 G Street. Parking is no longer available at MLK due to budget cuts to the library security detail. Sunday hours at neighborhood libraries have also been discontinued. Only MLK remains open on Sundays, but without parking.

The Dupont Circle Citizens Association (DCCA) was founded in 1922 "to promote and protect the interests of the residents of the neighborhood." We still do that. Our area is a lively mix of homes, embassies, restaurants, shops, and galleries — and one of the city's most architecturally significant neighborhoods. These qualities are no accident. The unparalleled quality of living the neighborhood provides is the result of countless volunteer activities carried out by generations of Dupont Circle Citizens Association members. DCCA is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting interests of the residents of our neighborhoods.
